Take a piece of graph paper, and then put another on top, offset in the X and Y half a square size. You can still see the lines underneath, making it look like the grid has double the number of squares.

I don't know if this is technically accurate or not, but "<broad layman explanation>. The rest is math" is begging to be a snowclone.
